The Opera Guild for Atlanta is pleased to announce The Tommy Trotter Opera Competition (formerly The Tommy Trotter Memorial Summer Enrichment Competition) for university and college vocal students. Two $1,000 awards will be given to students accepted in summer workshop or apprentice artists programs. Samples of acceptable programs include Harrower Opera Workshop at Georgia State, American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, and apprentice artist programs at summer opera festivals.

Interested students should visit OperaGuildAtl.org/TrotterOperaComp/ to apply. The application deadline is March 3, 2023. Applicants will be notified in mid-April.

One of last year’s winners, Riley Ortega, used the Opera Competition funds to study at the Vienna Summer Music Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. “I was so lucky to get to work with such amazing individuals. From masterclasses and coachings with trained professionals to the other talented young artists I had the pleasure of working with, I learned so much about what it means to be an artist and the vast world of opera and performance. I am so grateful for the Atlanta Opera Guild and the Tommy Trotter Opera Award that supported me during this program,” Ms. Ortega said. No doubt, the experience helped Ms. Ortega win the 2022 Opera Guild Scholarship Competition in the undergraduate division.

Application Materials:

• Copy of program acceptance letter or contract
• Recommendation from vocal faculty attesting to skill and character
• Resume in PDF format
• Headshot in PDF or image format
• Three (3) opera arias, submitted via a YouTube link
• A YouTube playlist
• Recordings must be presented in high-quality, shot in landscape mode
• Please make sure you are well-lit with a clear focus
• For those using a prerecorded accompaniment track instead of live piano accompaniment, please ascertain your sound level is comparable to your singing
